McCain's Folly

Okay, so, we don't pick our presidents based on their vice presidential picks, but...McCain's Hail Mary pick of Sarah Palin is begging young people to do so. Forget it. First of all, if McCain really is the maverick he claims to be, he would've stuck to his guns and picked Lieberman. Why not ditch the Republicans and let Cindy Lou back you as an Independent, John?

Anyway, so he ditches his bud (whom I can't stand but admire for his pro-choice stance) in favor of an anti-science, religious right-winger who'd like to impose babies (even those conceived in rape and incest) on all of us.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think it's great that Palin and her husband have embraced their beautiful baby who happens to have Downs Syndrome. That's admirable. However, everyone can't make that choice or have the means to look out for their loved one once they are gone, especially in the Republican-led USA where "you're on your own."

Alaska is not the rest of America. Many Alaskans are paid/lured to live there. The oil industry is king and the governor doesn't need to worry about exploiting declining natural resources when she personally doesn't get the fact that polar bears are drowning and creationism doesn't belong in public schools.

As a 43-year-old woman who received a 20 gauge shot-gun (with a poly-choke:)) for her twelfth birthday, I don't want what Sarah wants. Yeah, it's fun to skeet shoot and I'd probably hunt if my family needed the meat. But I don't agree with aerial killing of wolves. That's not hunting. That's slaughter. Conserving and respecting nature is our gift to future generations.

I'm still trying to track down the site that said when asked about the conflict in Georgia, she replied, "I'll travel to Atlanta after the convention." I'm sure it must be a joke, right?

I loved Maureen Dowd's take on the whole story. Very funny.
