McCain's Folly

Okay, so, we don't pick our presidents based on their vice presidential picks, but...McCain's Hail Mary pick of Sarah Palin is begging young people to do so. Forget it. First of all, if McCain really is the maverick he claims to be, he would've stuck to his guns and picked Lieberman. Why not ditch the Republicans and let Cindy Lou back you as an Independent, John?

Anyway, so he ditches his bud (whom I can't stand but admire for his pro-choice stance) in favor of an anti-science, religious right-winger who'd like to impose babies (even those conceived in rape and incest) on all of us.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think it's great that Palin and her husband have embraced their beautiful baby who happens to have Downs Syndrome. That's admirable. However, everyone can't make that choice or have the means to look out for their loved one once they are gone, especially in the Republican-led USA where "you're on your own."

Alaska is not the rest of America. Many Alaskans are paid/lured to live there. The oil industry is king and the governor doesn't need to worry about exploiting declining natural resources when she personally doesn't get the fact that polar bears are drowning and creationism doesn't belong in public schools.

As a 43-year-old woman who received a 20 gauge shot-gun (with a poly-choke:)) for her twelfth birthday, I don't want what Sarah wants. Yeah, it's fun to skeet shoot and I'd probably hunt if my family needed the meat. But I don't agree with aerial killing of wolves. That's not hunting. That's slaughter. Conserving and respecting nature is our gift to future generations.

I'm still trying to track down the site that said when asked about the conflict in Georgia, she replied, "I'll travel to Atlanta after the convention." I'm sure it must be a joke, right?

I loved Maureen Dowd's take on the whole story. Very funny.

Hillary's Voice for Barack

That was amazing. During the roll call of state's votes, the state of New Mexico yielded to the state of Illinois who immediately yielded to the state of New York...and then there was Hillary who moved by acclamation the nomination of Barack Obama. She spoke with a firm, clear voice from the floor and led the convention to suspend voting...we now have a Democratic nominee to take on McCain in the Fall. I really liked her in that moment; she was strong and forthright and positive. I embrace her. Welcome, Hillary.

A Good Choice

I can see why Barack chose Joe. And David Brooks said it well, too, the other day.

China's Leaders Should Be Ashamed

Talk about evil empires...baiting people with official protest areas and then arresting them when they show up to protest. What does the Chinese government have to fear from two elderly women who wish to demonstrate? What about respecting one's elders? For shame!

Et tu, Cindy Lou?

So...between day camp and two trips to Michigan, I found myself on self-imposed writing vacation. Not that a lot didn't happen....

I'm curious to know what's going to happen at the upcoming conventions. Will Hillary challenge Barack? Will John McCain offer her the veep position? Will BHO pick Caroline Kennedy, Wesley Clark, Joe Biden, Kathleen Sebelius OR HRC?

I'm not losing sleep over all of this. Am not thrilled about the prospects on either side.

That said, I especially don't like McCain's recent snarky attacks and am glad that Obama is countering those 'us versus them' digs.

As I see it McCain represents what his wife Cindy represents...the too-precious patriarchal princess who thinks she deserves A LOT more than most people. How ironic that Cindy McCain recently claimed to be an only child while her half-sister (her sister!) is still alive and kicking. It's bad enough that Cindy's mom met their dad when he was still married to the older sister's mom...but he left all of his fortune to the younger daughter. And then THAT daughter has the temerity to claim she's an only child. Only heir, perhaps, but not only child.

Now what's up with that? Too bad the dad didn't look out for BOTH of his children. Too bad the younger daughter didn't make amends for her mother and father's betrayal by looking out for her big sister. I mean, if I was heir to a fortune, as is Cindy Lou, I would darn well look out for my kin and not deny their existence.

Her refusal to acknowledge the truth says a lot about her as a person...and where her husband's concerned, she pulled a move right out of her mother's playbook.

Not whom I'd want in the White House, thanks.
